I wrote a paper a while back rather verbosely entitled Phishing Detection and Prevention: Practical Counter-Fraud Solutions. I think it's a fine paper, full of technically detailed discussion regarding tactics for dealing with phishing as a network security problem. It's also completely useless for my parents, my kids, or anyone else who isn't elbows-deep in networking gear -- in other words, precisely the people who are the ideal targets for phishing campaigns and identity theft.

Enter Markus Jakobsson. He's an associate professor at Indiana University, and is widely considered to be the preeminent academic authority on phishing and related online crime. He's also that rare combination of both brilliant and practical. The latest manifestation of his unique perspective on battling Internet crime can be enjoyed at SecurityCartoon.com.

SecurityCartoon.com has been live for a little over a month, and the material is presented in a traditional one- to six-panel format. It's completely accessable to regular people, and it also happens to be 100% accurate. If you are a security professional, are fortunate enough to have non-geeks in your life, and haven't quite given up on trying to explain what you do to them, this may be the best resource out there for explaining the differences between viruses and spyware, spoofing and MITM'ing, or the many other online fraud topics Jakobsson and research associate Sukamol Srikwan tackle in the series.
