It all started in 2010 at an asado at Core's headquarters in Buenos Aires. Logan, a native Texan, made the offhand comment: "It's cute y'all like to play with BBQ". Now, if you're not familiar, asado is a huge part of the culture in Argentina. This alcohol-induced comment wasn't taken lightly, and thus a challenge was born.
Flash forward to 2011 and the Texas BBQ vs Argentine Asado competition is on. Upon arriving to Argentina, Logan and I made a trip to a local butcher outside of the city to try to attempt to explain how to cut American-style ribs and brisket:
Federico (one of the Ekoparty organizers) somehow built us two smokers based on a very limited mspaint image we made. We cooked our meat for 15 hours (waking up at 6am to do so):
We also threw together these shirts with the artistic help of Adriano Coglian:
Then, we invited all the Ekoparty speakers and organizers to chow down and ultimately determine who would take home the BBQ title for 2011.
You can see a bunch more photos here, including the masterful asado setup used by Core's Matias Blanco.
When all was said and done, the result was a draw. The Texas ribs were voted best flavor and the Argentine lomo was better than the brisket. We look forward to the competion at Ekoparty 2012 ;)
